GNOME file extension associations

FOr some inexplicable reason, gnome appears to have forgotten all the extensions for opening files. Now none of my file icons are correct in nautilus, and they don't open with the correct application if any at all.

Has anyone found this problem before, and how can I set the default application for each file type? (I know there is a preferred applications setup though this appears to only deal with web browser and a few specific programs.)

Thanks for any help

(BTW it's Gnome 2.10 on FC4.)

You can look somewhere in your menus for GNOME configuration. Right now I am online with Mandrake10.0 where it is: System > Configuration > GNOME > Advanced > File types and programs

Your menus are probably set up differently, but the actual program is:

/usr/bin/gnome-file-types-properties

You can type that into a command window to start the program. It should show you what applications you currently have associated with which file types and give you the opportunity to edit whatever is wrong or missing.

Thanks for that.

It would seem as though Gnome has managed to forget all the MIME data and extensions it knows, and I'm aware that there is a gnome-mime-data package, but I couldn't make yum update it.
