Gnome/Evolution calendar disintegration

I'm having little success in adding/modifying appointments in Gnome's calendar without having to use Evolution. I can see that calendar itself is stored in ~/.evolution/calendar/local/system/calendar.ics Changes made with Evolution are immediately reflected in the calendar produced by the clock applet. However, this is not the case when using any other calendar app. What am I missing?

Thanks.

what are you trying to edit the calendar with that isn't working?

I can edit the calendar (I've used gdeskcal and sunbird) but any changes I make aren't picked up by the clock applet (unless I kill and restart it). Editing the calendar in Evolution causes the clock applet to update straight away.

That's because the clock applet is dependent on Evolution to work; it only knows how to work with Evolution. AFAIK it doesen't work with any other calendar.
