Angry GNOME error on login

Hi all,

I'm relatively new RH8.0 and I have this GNOME login problem... When logging in GNOME gives me the following message:

Could not look up internet address for ..
This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly.
It may be possible to correct the problem by adding.
to the file /etc/hosts.

It doesn't say anything specific...... Some errors like this mean for instance the localhost (127.0.0.1) and I've checked it and it is present in the /etc/hosts file as follows.....

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain.

After that I get the following error message,

ERROR: Failed to load image:Switchdesk.png
Details: File not found.

I understand this one ofcourse, but I don't know how to correct it!
Any help is appreciated!

LG

have you given a name to your system or is it still jsut called boring old "localhost" ? if you have given it a name, add it to the end of that line in the hosts file

I had this error before, and it was becuse I had fiddled around with the start-up services (I had switched off the 'network' service, which needs to be running, even though my machine is not on a network). DId you do this?

You say it says: 'Could not look up internet address for ..'

Did you set your host name to '..' ? try using 'localhost' or something normal instead. Or do what acid_kewpie said, and add .. to the /etc/hosts file.

Question

Hello,

I am having the same issue.
However, I am on a network, LAN.
I have my ipaddress and other computers in the hosts file.
We are connected with a router (DHCP enabled).
address is 192.168.123.254
I have the only Linux box and three others have Windoz.

my etc/hosts:

192.168.123.1 debian debian
192.168.123.2 ship ship
192.168.123.10 star star
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain debian

I am still getting cannot find IP Address.
Is there something I am missing?

BTW: I only get this when I log on as a normal user.
When I log on as root via WDM, GDM, KDM, XDM no error!!

I expected these answers..... but I still have the error...
I've checked the /etc/hosts file and it has the following line..

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain

I've also tried to give my computer a different name (as if it would work)
The error doesn't give me any specifiecs and the hostname is not accidently set to ' .. '

I've read alot of posts now wich all say that the line above should be in the /etc/hosts file......well it is.....

The strange thing is this....It's not the first time that I've installed RH8.0 and the I've had times that I had an error free system after installation....

I would appreciate more replies......
