Gnome Desktop Panel quirk

i've been having this issue for a while now and it's really annoying. basically, a small portion in the upper left-hand corner of the panel on my desktop disappears. this happens only when i'm not hovering over the panel. if the cursor is over the panel then it is normal. here are 2 screenshots of said phenomenon. in the 1st shot, the cursor was not over the panel. the 2nd, the cursor was simply moved over the panel. i wish i could make an animation of this to make the explanation easier. also, the screenshots don't display the cursor, so you can't actually tell where it was in each screenshot. i'm running RH 9, kernel 2.4.20-9

1st Screenshot

2nd Screenshot

anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is?

video error, could be bad video driver, could be gnome-panel error, could be a glitch in the image fiel for the icon, could be.. could be...

this is not so easily solved, thus my question is are a few pixels worth so much trouble?

also do any other programs do that if oved to that corner?

i'm using an nVidia video driver that works well. also, the icons are fine, one of the 1st things i checked. also, it doesn't matter what icon/program/applet is in that corner they all do it

after monkeying with it some more, i'm inclined to believe it is a gnome-panel error. check this out:

new screen

this shows the panel moved to the bottom of the screen. the mozilla window is maximized, yet will not extend up past the panel's position before it was moved. also, the missing pixel problem does not occur with the panel on the bottom, as shown above.

finally, this screen (and i'll stop posting them after this one, i promise):

final screen

the panel is on the right, and in this position both problems are visible. the mysterious missing rectangle appears and windows cannot be fully maximized. i think i will also send an email to gnome.org about this as well.

that is more than likely a panel error... try KDE or another and see if you stil get the square.
