Gnome desktop mount icons
 

Anyone know how to make it so that mount points don't appear on the Gnome desktop? I want to keep it so that users can mount and unmount, but I don't want to have my windows partitions nor my / and /home partitions displayed on my desktop (all I want really is my trash bin icon and possibly shortcuts to programs, should I ever desire to put them on the desktop (so far the quick launch bar has been working well for me for over a year, I think I'll stick with that).

I read that removing users from /etc/fstab will do the trick for getting rid of the icons, but then the users can't mount and unmount, which is a pain.

Well, I have two steps that I believe may do it. I'm not going to try it because it involves doing a step that I've never been able to successfully come back from

As far as getting your home off of the desktop, open gconf-editer and go into APPS -> NAUTILUS -> DESKTOP. You'll find the options in there to remove the home and the trash. You can do just the home if that's all you want

if you want cd's to stop mounting automaticlaly, try this. In terminal as root type "supermount -i disable". This should make it so that you either have to mount the disks through terminal or use some kind of short cut. This will also unmount windows drivers and floppy drives from the desktop. To access them though, you can't mount them on the desktop. You have to go straight to the folder (ie: /mnt/floppy)

Actually, technically all the drives (except cd's/dvd's) are still mounted they just don't show up on the desktop. Play around with it and see what you can get to work. Good luck.

If you can't make it in gconf.. thake a look in the fstab file (/etc/fstab) I changes some values there and then the mount icons were gone, phoff magicly gone weheee..

Well, I guess I'll just have to live with the users not being able to mount/unmount the windows partitions, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem since they mount automatically on boot up. Thanks for the info about gconf, that got the computer icon off. I guess I'll just have to live with having the floppy and usb key drives showing up on the desktop, but at least I cleared up 6 or so icons now. Thanks mates

well you can mount windows partitions as a normal user, the changes are done in /etc/fstab, I had the same problem, got ridd of it. Don't remember how, but take a look in the fstab section in gentoos install manual wich you can find on their website..

Well, like I said, as long as I have them automount on boot, I don't think I'll have a problem with the windows partitions. And it might not be a bad idea to have the floppy, usb, and cdrom drives on the desktop, I can always unmount those if I want to, too, they don't need to always be mounted, like my Windows ones do (music files, etci), just more of a convenience. I guess that's just the way it'll be then.
