Gnome CD Player stops randomly, XMMS skips tracks

I have slackware 9.0 that ive just installed and have been playing CDs through Gnome CD player and XMMS. When playing through the CD player, midway through each track the player just stops. With XMMS, midway through songs it skips onto the next track. Anyone any ideas whats going on?

When I use XINE to play a music CD, it works fine.
