gnome active windows problem

On my gnome 2 taskbar i cannot see any of the active windows, i have to alt-shift to see my active windows, this is due to me fiddling with gnome. It used to show all the active windows as long rectangular shapes on the taskbar and then an icon (after my fiddling), now i have deleted said icon and have nothing now - how do i get it back?

Thanks and Regards

I'm not quite sure I got it right (perhaps a link to a screenshot would help), but here's what I think it is:

right click the panel, select `add'. Scroll down to the bottom, select `window list'.
