GNOME 2.6 problems with mime-types

Hello,

I installed GNOME 2.6 directly from sources and I have some problems.

1) gnome-help doesn't run exactly how one would expect. It starts ok. But when I try to load any documentation gedit starts and I only see an xml document in it's source form.
2) gnome-file-properties doesn't influence nautilus in any way. Nautilus simply doesn't see any MIME Types.

This is the raw form of my problems.

I did a lot of searching on the Internet and I found out that my only true problem is the fact that MIME types aren't seen by the system. This is really frustrating. I can't view help files with the gnome-help application, I can't browse image directories with gThumb, I can't even set a background image.

It seems, as I found out that other people had similar problems when upgrading to GNOME 2.4. Is there somebody who can help me?

More details:
If I try to add a new MIME type using Nautilus (right click-> open With-> An application) any change I make is not seen by GNOME since if I start gnome-file-properties it isn't displayed there. The irony is that when I launch gnome-file-properties a lot of files have associated applications but I can't use any of it. What is tha problem. I struggled with this for two month now. Please help me, or at least point me to a site, a person or somebody who might.

Thank you

YOU RULE MAN!!!!!!!

I don't think you can even hardly imagine the exiliration I felt when running GNOME, opening nautilus and BANG Every jpg, wav, mp3 etc etc etc WAS SEEN.

THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES.

MY SUFFERING HAS COME TO AN END THANKS TO YOU.

Sorry if I bored you but I can't stop myself. I am now sitting satisfied in front of my computer and gaze at my Macchu Picchu background which finally rests on my monitor's diodes. The stream of electrons rushes at 70 Hz creating a picture of ultimate happines inside my brain.

Thank you again. If I might help you with something, anything, just let me know. If you like travelling, come to Romania sometime. You ended my misery which lasted for about 2 months, the least I can do is give you shelter for a week or two.

OK I got carried away back there but I'm so glad. I finally made it thanks to you.

Long life and prosperity.

No worries. I made the same mistake the first time I installed Gnome-2.6 http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5971 shared-mime-info is listed in the installation order http://www.gnome.org/start/2.6/notes...tallation.html but it wasn't mentioned in the version of Beyond Linux From Scratch I was following at the time and as none of the packages failed to compile I wasn't aware there was anything missing...
