gnome 2.2 on redhat 8 -- how ?

I'm trying to get gnome 2.2 running on Redhat 8.0. I built the gnome components from source and ran 'make install' which put the files in /usr/local/*. This means that I still have the gnome 2.0 binaries and libraries installed in /usr/bin, /usr/lib etc. The problem is that I'm not sure how to get the desktop to use the gnome 2.2 components. I modified /etc/profile to prepend /usr/local/bin to the path, but although I now get what I assume is a gnome 2.2 desktop, I get various error dialogs popping up. Unfortunately these dialogs and the entire desktop including root menu etc. have no text in them. Looks like a font (server?) configuration issue. I'm not really sure what I need to do to get gnome 2.2 running. Now I'm looking at all the dot files and directories in my home directory wondering if they're compatible with 2.2.

So, what do I need to do to get gnome 2.2 running ?

Also, I don't want to start a religious debate (please!) but am I nuts to want to run gnome 2.2 ? Should I go with KDE ?

Thanks !

Nigel
