gnokme/gentoo issues

I am running an AMD64 install with 2.6.14 kernel, gentoo 2005.1, NVIDIA card (still using nv drivers right now) and gnome. When I try and run firefox, mozilla, or thunderbird, nothing happens. Even from the command prompt, it looks like nothing happened. When I run GIMP, I get stack smashing attack in function _cario_stroker_join. When I run Epiphany, it crashes and calls up Bug buddy. When started from the console, it says GnomeUIWarning. Authentication Required. Anyone have any idea what is causing this? Thanks.

Excellent ,sounds like fun. Is there anything shown in the logs to show what is going on and detailing the reasons for either not doing anything or crashing? Also, when you run "top" or "ps aux", are the applications you are launching listed as actually running or not?

What logs do you think would be useful? When I run top, epiphany doesn't show up. It crashes. When run from command line, there is no error message. Firefox locks up trying to load extensions
