gmplayer returns a fatal error when trying to play a DVD

SuSE 9.3 Pro
I'm trying to play an encrypted DVD. $ mplayer dvd:// works but $ gmplayer dvd:// returns an error, which means there's no GUI so I can't fast forward, rewind, pause...

The error message from $ gmplayer dvd:// is:
Quote:

Fatal error!

Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

Well, this doesn't solve your actual problem, but just for reference (and because a lot of people prefer using the keyboard than the mouse once they get used to it), here are some keyboard shortcuts snaffled from here:
Code:

Here are some useful keyboard shortcuts (these keys may/may not work, depending on your video output driver):

    <- or ->            seek backward/forward 10 seconds
up or down            seek backward/forward 1 minute
    pgup/pgdown            seek backward/forward 10 minutes
    < or >                      seek backward/forward in playlist
p or SPACE            pause movie (press any key)
q or ESC            stop playing and quit program
+ or -                      adjust audio delay by +/- 0.1 second
    / or *                      decrease/increase volume
    o                      toggle OSD: none / seek / seek+timer
    m                      toggle using master/pcm volume
z or x                      adjust subtitle delay by +/- 0.1 second

(the following keys are valid only when using DirectShow DivX codec or DivX4 codec with -vc divx4)
    1 or 2                      adjust contrast
    3 or 4                      adjust brightness
    5 or 6                      adjust hue
    7 or 8                      adjust saturation

(the following keys are valid only with TV input support)
    h or l                      select previous/next channel
    n                      change norm
    b                      change channel list

As for your actual problem... do you only get it with playing DVDs? Try with a variety of files and see if you can pin down what under what circumstances the problem presents itself. Also, if you could go into your GMplayer preferences and post the video_out setting that would help a lot. Further, you could try setting it to "x11" if it isn't already. Even better, could you look at the startup messages when you run mplayer (successfully) and see what -vo setting you're using there?

Thanks, they worked!

I'm using an onboard graphics card (integrated graphics) ABit VA-20. Maybe that's the problem?

I got it to work. I changed the driver in gmplayer > settings > video from xv to X11.

Dtsazza 10-28-2005 01:39 PM

Excellent. I've had a problem or two with MPlayer output in the past (I couldn't get it to fullscreen properly) and merely trying different -vo options until I found one that works did the trick for me too.
