GMPlayer and ALSA-Control Error

When I try and run Mplayer it there are no errors. However, if I want to use GMplayer, the error

alsa-control error: mixer attach /dev/mixer error. No such file or directory.

pops up continuously at a very fast rate. I know that the file is there because I can see it, it is a symbolic link to mixer0, which is in the /dev directory.

I'm sure that the problem is that I have some crappy onboard sound card, but it doesn't make sense because the movie will still play, with sound, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Anyone ever run into a problem like this before?
