glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

Hi all,

When I run glxgears, I get the following error:
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

Also, this is the output of glxinfo:
name of display: :0.0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

Previously, the error when I ran glxgears was:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0"
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig
Since then, I had downloaded updated nvidia drivers and now I'm not getting the Xlib GLX missing message, but I'm not sure if this is an improvement or not since I'm a bit new to Linux.

Does anyone have any advice on how to approach this problem? I've been trying to debug this for the past few weeks with no luck, so I would really appreciate some help on this.

Mesa drivers are not loaded.

Could you explain what you mean when you say they're not loaded? I already ran
Quote:

yum install mesa-libGL
and
Quote:

yum install mesa-libGL-devel
, but that hasn't solved anything so far.

Before we continue ...
What did you mean by nvidia in your first post: X.org nouveau driver or NVIDIA proprietary driver?

.

awkawaii 08-08-2016 02:28 PM

nvidia proprietary driver, but currently when I run nvidia-smi, it gives me
Quote:

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
I downloaded the drivers from the elrepo repository.

mesa-libGL should not be used with the NVIDIA proprietary driver.
1)Install NVIDIA once again.
2)Reboot and start X.
3)Post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log here.

When I re-installed the nvidia driver version 367.27 and then rebooted, it gave me a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner. I solved this by deleting the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, which then let me log back in. This is the first half of the output from /var/log/Xorg.0.log (because of character limit):

The log posted by you shows that you have Intel (and not NVIDIA) video card. Please post the output of the following command:
Code:

Also, by proprietary nvidia driver, xorg-x11-drv-nvidia that was installed with cuda counts right? When I tried to install using yum install kmod-nvidia after installing the cuda drivers, it gave me a conflict since it automatically tried to install version 367.35, while the cuda nvidia driver was 352.93.

zk1234 08-08-2016 04:04 PM

OK. You have an NVIDIA card, too. Let's check if you have the correct version of kernel module. Post the output of
Code:

modprobe nvidia

awkawaii 08-08-2016 04:09 PM

Here's the output of modprobe nvidia:

Quote:

FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.32-642.3.1.el6.x86_64/extra/nvidia.ko): No such device
I'm not sure if it's because of how my laptop has 2 graphics cards. I was told to disable the Intel graphics card from the BIOS, but the option wasn't there. There was only an intel virtualization option, which I'm guessing is for virtual machines only.

This usually means that the version of the nvidia kernel module installed by you does not support your card. Please post the output of
Code:

cat /var/log/messages | grep nvidia

awkawaii 08-08-2016 04:28 PM

When I run
Quote:

cat /var/log/messages | grep nvidia
, I get no output. I'm guessing that means that the nvidia kernel module has not yet been installed on my machine. I've tried looking up the file to download and I think it's one of the kernel files in /elrepo/kernel/el6/x86_64/RPMS on the elrepo website. Am I on the right track?

zk1234 08-08-2016 04:32 PM

Your card is supported by the version 367.35 of NVIDIA proprietary driver. Make sure you have this version installed.

.

awkawaii 08-08-2016 04:42 PM

Okay, I installed kmod-nvidia 367.25-1.el6.elrepo and nvidia-x11-drv 367.35-1.el6.elrepo using the
Code:

yum install kmod-nvidia
command after uninstalling the cuda drivers. What should I do next?

awkawaii 08-08-2016 04:43 PM

Now when I run nvidia-smi, it gives me:
Quote:

FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.32-642.3.1.el6.x86_64/weak-updates/nvidia/nvidia.ko): No such device
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

zk1234 08-08-2016 04:59 PM

Acoording to NVIDIA specification:
http://www.nvidia.com/download/drive...x/105343/en-us
your card (GeForce GT 640M LE) should be supported.

Are you now using the same computer, which we are trying to configure ?

.

awkawaii 08-08-2016 05:03 PM

yes, I'm using that computer to download and configure.

zk1234 08-08-2016 05:05 PM

We must blacklist Intel and tell X.org to use nvidia. Let's start with blacklisting. Post the output of:
Code:

lsmod

awkawaii 08-08-2016 05:21 PM

Here's the output for

Add the following line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Code:

blacklist i915
Do not quit X now!
Tell me when you're done.

Tell the X.org server to use nvidia by creating a new file:
Code:

touch /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-driver.conf
and editing it as follows:
Code:

Section "Device"
  Identifier "nvidia.driver"
  Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Do not quit X now!
Tell me when you're done.

If something goes wrong you will have no X. To restore Intel you must remove /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-driver.conf, remove "blacklist i915" from the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file, and reboot. You can make use of the "mc" command (simple file manager, which works without X; use F4 button to edit files). Make sure that you have it installed (if not, use of yum to install it).

When you are ready, you can reboot your machine.

.

awkawaii 08-08-2016 05:57 PM

After rebooting, it went to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. I did what you said and removed /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-driver.conf and removed "blacklist i915" from the file and rebooted, and then the X was back up.
Is there any other alternative at this point?

zk1234 08-08-2016 06:02 PM

Post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old.

Do you happen to know the corresponding commands in CentOS?

I meant the nvidia-settings command.

zk1234 08-08-2016 06:57 PM

My (unfortunately) last idea is to add BusID to the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-driver.conf file
BusID
Code:

Section "Device"
  Identifier "nvidia.driver"
  Driver "nvidia"
  BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

awkawaii 08-08-2016 07:10 PM

When I run
Code:

nvidia-settings
, it tells me:

Quote:

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver.
Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server.
I tried running
Code:

nvidia-xconfig
and then it created a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. After rebooting, the screen again went black until I deleted that file. A lot of times, when my X server isn't starting, it works again after I delete that file. But that file is blank, so I'm not sure what's causing it to affect my X server. Any suggestions?

The one posted above (BusID). And no more ideas. Sorry.

awkawaii 08-08-2016 07:22 PM

The BusID method didn't work either. I really appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into helping though! Thanks.

Before, you were saying that NVIDIA proprietary drivers conflict with mesa though? How would you recommend I overcome that problem?

ondoho 08-14-2016 05:03 AM

i subscribed to this thread a few days ago to see where it goes...

a little overhead info:

i read you are using centos; centos is basically the same as redhat, and those are server distros.
it means, their maintainers have little to no interest to keep up repos for proprietary gpu drivers.

so, my, very simple advice would be that you re-evaluate your choice of distro, and maybe install something more suitable for desktop use and/or gaming, or a nice, stable all-purpose distro like debian stable.

IF you are determined to continue solving this on centos, read on...

installing a suitable nvidia proprietary driver on centos most probably involves enabling some special repos and several more steps, most probably outlined somewehere in the centos/redhat wiki pages.
please search and tell us what you find.

additional difficulty is to determine in which current state of non-functionality your already installed nvidia driver is, i think that is what you were mostly working on in the previous posts?

i haven't read everything in this thread, but i would like to start by determining what sort of hardware you have there.
just tell us in your own words, or point me to a specific post where this was covered.

edit:
just found this https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...0/#post5588284 might become relevant later on in the process
