Glib not installing

Ok here is the scenario:
I'm running Mandrake 9.1 on a Duron 1300 with a crap load of ram and everything is sweet except for the fact that GLib is old and I need to update it. I downloaded it and installed and still when I try to upgrade my software such as XMMS and GAIM they say that Glib is not a valid version.

What is going on?

The install of glib seems to go fine, until this happens.

Did you run ldconfig? If not, log in as root and run ldconfig and then reboot. That may fix the problem. See:
man ldconfig
