Hi. I'm not a gamer, but was trying to help a newbie on the newbie forum who had problems installing stuff, particularly games. He was trying 3d pong from
http://directory.fsf.org . He could not get it to run, neither could I. It is from 1998 so perhaps it just won't work on today's distro's. I tried it on FC2, and FC5, which he is using. Anyway, trying to offer him an alternative I went to
http://www.libsdl.org , and found airpong. This has a ready made makefile, and you only have to run make to create the binary. Clicking on the binary brings up a window of similar size to Konqueror, named airpong, but quite static, using 100% CPU, and with white space in the left hand top corner, and near the centre. Any ideas? Another game early on the list is Alizarin Tetris (atris). This works ok, as long as you install the SDL-ttf libraries.
As I've said. I'm not a gamer, and am more into music, but having spent most of yesterday, and the evening before trying to resolve dependency problems for games, I'd say that music apps are easier to deal with. This isn't always the case as some developers, who use cutting edge libraries, which work fine on the distro they have built the app on, but will not work on other distro's, again because of dependency problems.
Not nice being a newbie trying to install source code. Nigel. aka farpoint.
Dependencies, Dependencies, All these Dependencies. Where will it all end???
