gKrellm disappears (but is still running) in Gnome
Hello,
I am running Fedora Core 8 with whatever version of Gnome is in the default repositories (2.18, I think). When launched, gKrellm will run as expected for a while, and then suddenly disappear from the desktop. It is still running (top of the list in htop) and if launched from the command line, the cursor still has not returned to a new command line. I found limited results when googling for 'gkrellm disappear gnome' and so I figured I'd start a thread. :) Any input would be greatly appreciated. sleepy |
This is not a Gnome issue nor a distro problem. I use KDE with Mandriva. Ever since I updated to kernel version 2.6.24.4 my gkrellm disappears when I switch desktops and I can no longer connect to my remote machines (they are running gkrellm-server) to monitor them.

My initial thoughts were that it was Gnome-specific because I was not experiencing the disappearing-gKrellm when running KDE. I've only been running Gnome for two days now (trying to more closely emulate the end-user experience since they use Gnome) and it was all KDE for over a year before this. I also run KDE at home on MEPIS linux and have never experienced this before.
Nexus, I too am running the 2.6.24 kernel, but have a different revision that you do. [5059-me@machine_name-~] uname -a Linux machine_name.our_domain.com 2.6.24.5-85.fc8 #1 SMP Sat Apr 19 12:39:34 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Do you think the problem is with the 2.6.24.* kernel in general? Thanks for the reply, sleepy |
An update:
A new kernel revision came down the pipe a few minutes ago. After installing kernel 2.6.24.7-92.fc8 and rebooting, the disappearing gKrellm problem is still present. [4997-me@machine_name-~] uname -a Linux machine_name.our_domain.com 2.6.24.7-92.fc8 #1 SMP Wed May 7 16:50:09 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux sleepy |
Does yours also disappear when switching desktops? If so, does your desktop also do this fade in thing when you switch?

As of yesterday, I would have agreed that switching desktops did cause my gKrellm to disappear. This morning, however, I've had gKrellm running for about 40 minutes and have switched desktops about 50 times...and gKrellm is still there!
I've been trying to find things that seemed to make it disappear yesterday, like opening multiple fullscreen applications and switching between them, switching desktops, etc. but to no avail. It's still running. Also, there is no 'fade in thing' when I switch desktops. It's quick and clean from one desktop to another. sleepy |

Did you also apply the kernel update I referenced in my above post? If so, then I guess that appears to have fixed the problem.
If not...I'm guessing it was gremlins. :jawa: :p sleepy |
No I didn't apply any kernel updates. I still can't connect to my remote gkrellm-server though.
