git revision an entire linux install

"Wow!"

Potentially some disk space problems with doing this, but given that small installs can be quite reasonable -- and that long running systems might not have many changes (exclude /home, /proc, /sys, and /var, I guess.)

Has anyone tried to do this?

If so, was it awesome, or stupid?

Or, is there any better way to keep track of changed/modified files/packages across the OS?

I assume much better to use the OS's own package management system, otherwise you will not be able to install packages properly

Hi Pan,

What I'm proposing isn't a method to install or remove packages. It's just a way to track changes that have been made on the system since their installation. There is no way to install a package with git, directly. (Well, I guess you could clone a binary into the filesystem ... but no!)
