Gimp redeye plugin not working in version 2.2.7

I can't seem to find the redeye function in the Gimp. I upgraded from core 3 to core 4 a while back and yesterday I went to use the redeye correction tool and it wasn't in it's usual location. I tried reinstalling the plugin, which comes as a c file, redeye.c, by running
gimptool-2.0 --install redeye.c
and it compiles and installs fine, it's in the .gimp-2.2/plugins directory, but to no avail, I still can't find it. It used to be in "Filters/Misc/". It worked very nicely.
I've done a lot of Googling and have found lots of info on this including some other people experiencing the same problem without a cure. Do I need to downgrade the Gimp? I'm using version 2.2.7 now. Thanks.

It may not be the answer you're looking for, but you could do worse than this http://mmmaybe.gimp.org/tutorials/Red_Eye_Removal/

Thank you, Andrew. I looked at the page and got some clues to other things that can be done. Very informative.
I downgraded to Gimp 2.0 and the redeye plugin is back. Thanks again.
