gimp-print

hello,
im having a bit trouble using the gimp-print 4.2.5 driver. er... how do i? i've downloaded the tar.gz file and ./configure then make then make install and it all went fine as far as i could see, but how now do i use that printer driver i supposedly just installed? i looked in the usr/bin directory and there's a few files: libgimpprint.so, libgimpprint.so.1, libgimpprint.so.1.0.1 each of which i've tried to direct the KPrinting Manager. but it just says "Wrong driver format." i was hoping this would be easy, and probably should be. im trying to use the gimp-print drivers because i couldnt get the ordinary 3 supplied epson drivers to do anything. with them, i tried every combination of port and driver with those 3 drivers on the 3 (i thought i only had 1) printer ports shown as being available. but no joy as of yet.
thanks in advance for any help.

Have you checked your printer model at http://www.linuxprinting.org/

Mr Marmmalade 04-01-2003 08:26 AM

yes, it's an epson stylus photo 810 (ooh!), and its supported 'perfectly' or however they say 100% supported.
ta.

Ok then, is it apsfilter thats causing you problems? or cups? or lpr?
Your original post has little information about your hardware or print spooler, making it a tad harder to work out where the problem is. We need to know if the printer is usb or pp for example, and what version of which print spooler are you using?

Mr Marmmalade 04-01-2003 01:30 PM

parllel port /dev/lp0
APS Driver (pips/sp810_820)
LPR/LPRng print system.
i got it to print garbage, but that aint much use i dont know where the gimp-print drivers come into this current setup as i cant see anything relating to it.
i made it the default printer. i set it up using KDE's print manager, thus;
add printer/class,
localprinter
parallel port 1
epson stylus photo 810
and called it 'Printer'.
when i open say open office and goto print and it says the printer is Generic Printer , status 'Default Printer', type 'SGENPRT'.
does that help you any?
slackware 9.0 eh? mmm.

Aussie 04-01-2003 04:26 PM

Try installing CUPS, there should be a slackware 8.1 package in the 8.1 /extra directory on your local slackware mirror, or you can install it from source, you'll also need to install espgs (get it from the same place as cups).
Once both of those are installed you may need to recompile gimp-print with cups support, then try the KDE add printer wizard.

currently downloading cups slack8.1 extra. which of the print systems should i use, the cups one? i'll get that espgs as soon as cups is down. thanks. i'll let you know how it goes.
