GIMP 2.8 tool box problem with Lubuntu 14.04

I just did install Lubuntu 14.04 (it's the only distro that allows my old SIS 760 graphic card to give me the right resolution 1280 X 800) and then did install GIMP. The problem is...no tool shows in the tool box. The whole box is covered with black zebra lines. Then, you click where the tool icons should be and they appear but...not those at the very bottom (see the atttacment) Any ideas? Widening the box doesn't help...much.
Maybe I should say that I did download it by using the terminal typing sudo apt-get install gimp

Looks like screen tearing, which others have also experienced with SiS cards on Linux (see https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1343369 for example).

Have a look around the web for "SIS 760" graphics linux screen tearing to see if there any solutions out there. Is replacing your graphics card an option?

The graphic card is part of the mother board.

Do you have a slot free to add another graphic card?

This card is part of the motherboard so I guess there's no way to ad another one.

If you have a free slot then you can put another graphics card in there. The one in your motherboard can either be turned off in the Bios or will automatically be ignored if another graphics card is installed. Just to make sure, which motherboard do you have?

I don't know which motherboard I have. This is an old Acer 3003 WLMI. I don't want to put a penny in it. I just keep it as a spare/back-up. It use to run Windows XP PRO. I did an eRecovery with it and got stuck at a eRecovery page. The only way to move on was to erase the harddrive. I didn't have the Windows recovery or install dics so I had to go with Linux/Lubuntu.
I would think that going back to install Gimp 2.6 instead of 2.8 would do the trick but...looks that is a huge complicated job to do.
