GIMP - 16 bit/color (48 bit/pixel)

One reason I installed Mandrake 10.1 was to use the original GIMP. 10.1 comes with GIMP v. 2.0, and I'll upgrade it shortly to 2.2 (as some functions like USM have a preview in 2.2)

I was led to believe, since the Windohs version of GIMP does not support images encoded at 16 bits/color (48 bit pixels), that the Linux v. of GIMP did support 16 bit/color.

Oops. It does not.

What apps do support 16 bit/colort under Linux?

(Note: my film scanner performs 16 bit/color (true performance is closer to 13 or 14), but the full Photo$hop is required to do 16 bit/color. A 'freeware' v. under windows I can't find to date...)

All help appreciated.

Cheers,
Alan.

CinePaint, a fork of the GIMP (formerly known as Film Gimp) supports up to 32 bits per channel.
