Question Gimp-1.3 inserting text

I've just installed Gimp-1.3.
I've put some colors in the backgound of my image
and I would like to display a text in it to design an
"About window".
When clicking on the Gimp Text widget I can select fonts and colors
of the text I want to type in.
I then click on the new layer to insert the text.
A gimp text window then opens and I type in the text.
But the font is not the one I choose (nor the color), and the text doesn't appear
on the layer nor on the background.
Could someone tell me
- why can't I apply the selected font
- why isn't the text inserted in the layer or background
