giFTcurs requires gLib.. do I have it?

(i'm running Mandrake 9.1, very fresh (installed yesterday :) )
I'm trying to install giFTcurs - http://www.nongnu.org/giftcurs/ and although i'm able to unzip it, and get to config, i can't "make" since it says that glib is required. what is glib? do i have it, should i install it? thanks for any help,

Tom

also can someone guide me through installing giFT?

Yes download and install, most likely if your going to install a lot of programs based off or use Gnome, then install glib. You can find more info at:

is giFT required?

whoistom 09-14-2003 05:03 PM

i'm still struggling. how do i install glib?? ./install? i can't find any resources on how to do installs... are they standardized? and how do i find out if it's installed correctly or not? i could really use some help.

whoistom 09-14-2003 05:15 PM

it appears that some other glib components are already installed, but for development purposes... can i get glib as a rpm???

whoistom 09-14-2003 07:39 PM

okay... i've been able to install giFT, openFT, but glib is still giving me lots of problems
i'll "make install" it and it appears to go through, but when i try to configure giFTcurs it always says that glib isn't there.

whoistom 09-14-2003 07:50 PM

this might be the problem but i'm not sure how to fix it- in the install directions it has:

Simple install procedure
========================

% gzip -cd glib-2.2.3.tar.gz | tar xvf - # unpack the sources
% cd glib-2.2.3 # change to the toplevel directory
% ./configure # run the `configure' script
% make # build GLIB

[ Become root if necessary ]
% rm -rf /install-prefix/include/glib.h /install-prefix/include/gmodule.h
% make install # install GLIB

i haven't done % rm -rf /install-prefix/include/glib.h /install-prefix/include/gmodule.h and i'm not sure how to set it up (what to put as install-prefix) or what it does... do i need to specify a location for glib to go?

yet another twist to this story (like anyone is listening)

glib 2.0 is (and has been) installed in usr/local/include/glib2.0/glib

but it isn't recognized... at all..

whoistom 09-14-2003 08:19 PM

gtk+ is also not recognized by giFToxic...

acid_kewpie 09-15-2003 07:34 AM

right, you should *NOT* have installed glib from source. remove it and install glib-devel-2.2.2 from your distro cd's instead, giftcurs should then pick it up instantly.

giftoxic sucks.... really poor, go with giftcurs everytime.

i ran into the same problem as whoistom.
I had glib installed but it does not provide everything you need .
Went back through my mdk 9.1 power pack cds and installed all the gnome development stuff and everything works fine. The only problem i have with it is searches for movies dont seem to work as good as searches for mp3.

whoistom 09-15-2003 04:42 PM

i was just trying giftToxic to see if i could get a p2p w/o that other stuff... it was a definite second choice... and i'm pretty sure glib isn't included on the (download) version of mandrake...

whoistom 09-15-2003 07:20 PM

ok... now giFTcurs is installed... the only problem is that giFT is not... when i try to install gift it goes through fine, but then i run giftcurs and nothing happens. is there a way to start giFT? typing "gift" into the console doesn't work.

MasterC 09-15-2003 07:25 PM

IT's case SENsiTivE:
giFT -d

The -d makes it so that you can close your xterm window, or reuse your console window (puts giFT into daemon mode) to launch giFTcurs.

Cool

alright i'll try that when i get home. thanks.
