Is there anything like symantec ghost for linux? I know ghost on windows can copy an image of a linux box. But I want to get away from using windows boxes. Is there something that can just image a drive from linux? other than perhaps kickstart?

If you mean like ghost, as in proprietary, then Acronis True Image 8.x does linux imaging.

If you mean GPL'd, then partimage or dd, or a myriad of others do imaging.

Also, there is something called ghost for linux, but I don't know how well it works.

partimag looks exactly like what I wanted thanks. I know dd can do it but I was looking for something to compress.

I'd be slightly wary of partimage. It does work, I've used it myself. However the stable version hasn't been updated in a year, unstable in almost two. Looks like the developers might have lost interest so no bugfixes etc.
