getting "segmentation fault" when trying to ls

Greetings.

I'm getting a segmentation fault whenever I try to "ls" to see the contents of my directories ... I can "cd" at will, and the web server is still functioning properly, because I can add orders to web sites, access the mysql database, etc. What I *cannot* do is list directories, nor can I access samba shares on that box from my Windows computer ...

What's going on, and what can I do to troubleshoot it?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Kenn

How about a little more info? Kernel version, Distro, etc.

Use the uname command to get kernel version. Run either "uname -r" or "uname -a" and post results.

Okay, the problem has worsened ... I can no longer boot the system .... it hangs early on in the boot cycle ... after displaying the message, "egrep 2.5.1" and its copyright notice ... does that multiple times, but goes no further ...

So, I'm thinking of trying to fsck from Knoppix ... what do you think?

Thanks.

Desperate.

Sounds like a plan. If you can get it up and running a again you should try to update the system to the latest software and see if it solves the seg error.
