Question getting PHP to work...please help!

Hello all,

I'm trying to set up a webserver, I got Fedore core 3 installed with Apache and PHP that Fedora comes with

Apache version is 2.0 and it's PHP 4.3.10
i set up the webserver so that

localhost/index.html

works fine. I build basic, crappy HTML pages and they are displayed just fine.

Also

localhost/test.php

works perfectly too, It bring us up that PHP info page.

But....

When i make a simple index.php page, that just echos out some text, i get:

"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocumentation to hangle the request."

The three above files that i mentioned:
index.html (which i renamed index.bk, so i could test index.php)
test.php
index.php

are all in the same folder and have the same permissions.

help!

pax,
rudini

PS: sorry i couldn't include the http in front of the localhost

Q: In your httpd.conf configuration file for Apache, what is specified in the "DirectoryIndex" directive? If memory serves, if that doesn't include "index.php" you'll see the sort of error you described.

Hope this helps...

Okay....I'm weirded out.

I created another very simple php page called blowpop.php (contains one echo statement in standard HTML tags).

localhost/blowpop.php works fine....

the trouble I'm seeing is that when i try to go to php pages that a friend gave me:
index.php
process_logout.php
process_login.php

The above 3 pages and friend e-mailed them to me and for w-e reason those are the only pages that give me the 403 error.

rudy

PS: i added index.html .htm and .php into my "DirectoryIndex" in my httpd.conf

Try changing the permissions on those pages to "755" and/or changing their ownership to whoever owns the directory that contains the files being served e.g. chown root.root /var/www/htdocs/*.

Well I believe the permissions are fine, but this changing owner ship thing might do the trick.

How do i go about seeing whom currently owns what?

thanks again,

Hello,

I was having the same problem as you mention here and I managed to solve it by deleting all virtual host under Virtual Hosts tab.

Below is my httpd.conf.

Hope these will help...

Hmm, as far as i can tell our httpd.conf is pretty much identical, but you kinda lost me with:

" deleting all virtual host under Virtual Hosts tab"

Ummm.....huh? What tab? Where?

If you mean the HTTP GUI thing...i only have one virtual host and that's the Default one.....

pax,
rudy

ls -l <- right...duh! Stupid on my part....hmmm okay....all owners and permission are the same for all the working and non-working pages....weird.

Go to your httpd.conf file and see if you can find the section similar to this:

<VirtualHost *:80>
...
... some options ....
...
</VirtualHost>

if yes - that could mean you have virtual host configured so if you don't really need it you can comment it with #. Anyway I'd stick to that you have something wrong in permissions/ownership .
The best would be if you posted here your httpd.conf and output form ls -l

# DefaultLanguage and AddLanguage allows you to specify the language of
# a document. You can then use content negotiation to give a browser a
# file in a language the user can understand.
#
# Specify a default language. This means that all data
# going out without a specific language tag (see below) will
# be marked with this one. You probably do NOT want to set
# this unless you are sure it is correct for all cases.
#
# * It is generally better to not mark a page as
# * being a certain language than marking it with the wrong
# * language!
#
# DefaultLanguage nl
#
# Note 1: The suffix does not have to be the same as the language
# keyword --- those with documents in Polish (whose net-standard
# language code is pl) may wish to use "AddLanguage pl .po" to
# avoid the ambiguity with the common suffix for perl scripts.
#
# Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in some cases
# the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not identical to
# the two character 'Country' code for its country,
# E.g. 'Danmark/dk' versus 'Danish/da'.
#
# Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char
# specifier. There is 'work in progress' to fix this and get
# the reference data for rfc1766 cleaned up.

Rudy,

1) What version of HTTPD are you using?
2) Have you updated all the required RPM?
3) After amended HTTPD.conf file / HTTPD GUI, do you restart httpd service?
4) In order to narrow down this problem, have you turned off the security features (SELINUX)?

Hope these will help.
