getting ftpd up

hi there,

i'm having some problems getting my ftpd to come up. this is what i did:

[root@sandy rc5.d]# pwd
/etc/rc5.d
[root@sandy rc5.d]# ./S85proftpd start
Starting proftpd: sandy - Fatal: unable to determine IP address of 'sandy'.
[FAILED]

it would seem that the error was generated by /usr/sbin/proftpd, which is a binary. so i wasn't able to decipher how it would try to determine the host IP. any help would be much appreciated.

Looks like maybe you don't have any interfaces configured, such as eth0 or ppp0.

To start the proftpd daemon just type this:
service proftpd start

i tried both suggestions and they gave the same error as above ... i also did this:

[root@sandy root]# ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:A4:AA:A5:68
inet addr:192.168.0.140 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

collisions:28 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:1043420270 (995.0 Mb) TX bytes:644192094 (614.3 Mb)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0x4000

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:269 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:269 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:17931 (17.5 Kb) TX bytes:17931 (17.5 Kb)

ppp0 is nonexistent, then again the laptop is connected to a router.
