Question Getting Dovecot working

After a crashed harddrive I thought it might be time to try something new (used RH 9), so I installed Fedora Core 2. But with that came Dovecot and not the old Imap/POP3 deamons I used to have running.
When I try to start Dovecot it gives me an error saying there's no user -> no login. After looking around for some info on what kind of user (with password?) it should be I come here. Since the only info I've been able to find is people saying, you just install it and start it. No problem..

And another thing. I have to old mailboxes backed up. Is it possible to convert them to work with Dovecot?
