Getting a scanner to behave ....

I am having problems using my scanner. If I scan a page, most of the time the image is fine for the first 20% of the page but the rest of the scan appears as if it is a number of overlapping tiled windows with color tinted borders (it should be a single image).

This did not appear as a problem with Ubuntu 8.04 but is a major headache now (Ubuntu 8.10).

Any suggestions how to fix this?

I am using

HP Scanjet 3970
Xsane 0.996
Backend from here http://sourceforge.net/projects/hp3900-series/
