What distro are you using? Because I'm sure your distro has packages for themm and it's best to use the packages that come with your distro.

Yes, you can use them but make sure, you are not using old version of any distro. They wouldn't have the most latest packages.
May be you can find newer ones here:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/
(if redhat / fedora is your distro)

Installing apache, php and mysql from third party rpms can be a pain. I think its best to use the packages provided by your distro. If you are using an old distro like Redhat 9, the amount of time you spend looking for packages and resolving dependencies can be a waste of valuable time, so using a newer distro with newer packages is better.

I agree with this completely!
But somehow, I cud figure out the dependencies and performed associated actions.
If you are particularly interested in learning with latest versions, u shud take up the pain else, continue with the old ones.

I wrestled all of this for quite a while. There's a really easy way out. Use a ready-made LAMP stack. Here's my choice for that. These folks provide an upgrade path which has always worked for me.
