Get authentication error when starting postgresql for the first time

When I try to start postresql for the first time I get the following error messages:

soandso@home:~$ psql
psql: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "soandso"
soandso@home:~$ createdb mydb
createdb: could not connect to database postgres: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "soandso"

where soandso is my linux user name. Any help would be appreciated.
