gentoo + odd error message

Hey everyone, this has been going on for a while now and i havent found a solution but

everytime i use a terminal window for a while like run a lot of commands for example (emerge program).. then when i go to run the "graphical" program i get this:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

(fluxmenu:6647): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

in this case i tried to run fluxmenu.. and the only way i can run it is if i close the terminal and open a new one.. then it works..

anyone know how to fix this ?

to me it sounds like after you emerge (which is as root) you try to run the application still under the root account. So when you close the terminal and open a new terminal and do the command it works because you are doing the command as the current logged on user instead as root.
