Gentoo Linux

Has anyone used it? I've heard good things about the finishing result after installation with complete compilation of almost everything such as GCC and what not? I am contemplating doing a install of it but not sure. I hear the installation is a bitch but result is great.

Post Little more info

I am about to do the same thing so this is something I found that may help.

http://easylinuxguide.com/

You will need to scroll down to the guide part. This guy actually took notes while installing.

I'll wish you luck, if you wish me luck. My CD's are on the way for Gentoo and Slackware.

Get the idea yet. I have heard the same thing you have.

The installation is as easy as they come - if you can read (the doc's) and type. Before you do anything go to the gentoo forums and check with the latest bugs and problems in the installation forum.

Talking Hope you're right

I hope to get the CD's any day now. I hope you are right. I have two how to's to follow. He found a few 'cocka roaches' in the Gentoo one. Hang around crashmeister we may both need you before it's over.

Still trying to figure out how to do it from Mandrake though.

Excited, but nervous.

If you wanna get things prepped now, get yourself a partition to install to, just make a blank one using whatever partitioning program you choose (in mandrake, there is nothing better than diskdrake IMHO).

Then, before doing anything, read through the install docs from www.gentoo.org at least once, and get a feel for how things will go, then, as you are doing them, it won't be such a surprise.

Really is different than any other install I've done, however I wouldn't claim it to be "hard" by any stretch, simply different.

Good Luck, and I hope it's everything for you as it has been for me!

Cool

Go here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml
Point 7 should be what you need to do.Thats for a complete install from another distro.Did that myself in the dark days before I got a cdwriter. There is also some documentation about installing without network.

Thumbs up gentoo user!

i love it--yes installatio is time consuming, so, make sure you have more than a couple of hours if you want to get it right and you want to have more than just a base install.

if you know anything you know that it's from source, so all the compiling is done right there...no dependency issues either...imagine that. it detects hardware pretty well, too.

i used the stage1 install and just emerged everything before i rebooted into my new system, so i was sure everything worked. it took me a couple of times cuz iforgot to do this or that, so make sure you follow step by step, or you may end up having to do the install from step one.

good luck and congratulations if you begin
