Gentoo-like graphical shell?

Hi everyone! I recently installed Slackware 9 and would like to know if there is a way to create a graphical backround for the shell, something similar to Gentoo.

Thanks!

Leo.

use aterm.. you can have the shell display a background.

Or are you wanting one for the console?

Are you asking about framebuffer?

Framebuffer HOWTO

oubipaws, when you mean console are you talking about the individual console windows you can start inside an X windowing environment or the thing that comes up if you init to runlevel 3 without X?

I want to be able to init into level 3 and have a 1024x768 resolution with a nice background image. Have you ever tried Gentoo? Thats what I want.

Thanks for your reply!

fancypiper, do I have to use framebuffer, can't I just use native graphics card drivers?

fancypiper 07-24-2003 10:53 AM

I think that depends upon whether you run x or not and your video card..

Here is The Gentoo Framebuffer, Bootsplash (12VT) & Grubsplash How-To if that helps and theconsole, framebuffer, nvidia,1024x768@70Hz forum postings.

fancypiper, thanks! The info in the link looks pretty straight forward I'll take a look at it tonight at home.

Leo.
