Gentoo installation


I am about to install gentoo on my machine. And I have following problem: /dev/hda is Read-Only and capasity is only 82Mb. Why is that can anybody help, please?

ummm... i don't think it can be done.... 82mb is small.... too small, you could add a second hard drive and install to that hdb, but as for that tiny write protected POS... tough luck

hmm...but when i try go to /dev/hdc there is over 20gb free space

obliviously, your /dev/hda is your gentoo cdrom and /dev/hdc is your real hard drive...
is it possible that your cdrom is on the primary cable (ide cable 0) and hard drive on the secondary cable (ide cable 1)? This is a silly, but working configuration... if you are geek, you might want to change them back since the cdrom should be on second cable, in theory.

That may be right. I have a laptop that reports hdc as my HDD and the cdrom is on hda. Just install to hdc. Everywhere in the manual it says /dev/hda...just use /dev/hdc
