ok, well I did it all over again and still the same issue
this time I used the 2.6.9 kernel on the livecd and compiled manually with support for both ext2 and ext3 filesystems

I reformated /dev/hdb1 to ext3
did another complete runthrough and when trying to boot still the exact same error

root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
kernel /kernel-2.6.9-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/hdb3

Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition

Yeah, you basically just need to go into your BIOS and change disk access mode to "LBA" instead of 'auto'.

This link has some info, although it is for suse:
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/0...booting91.html
If you follow advice there, it should fix your problem.

Tried that also... It gives me the 'auto' option and the 'User' option

But still no love

I followed the gentoo handbook verbatim with the exception of changing partition / kernel info

i installed grub with
emerge grub
then i edited grub.conf with
nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf

and then
cp /proc/mounts /etc/mtab

finally

grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/hda

ok try booting up with a rescue disk or sometething and then from the command line type grub when the grub prompt comes up type:
root (hd1,0) and then enter
then type setup (hd1) edit these to the actual partitions you have. root should be what partition your boot partition is on and setup should be where the aster boot record is.

Ok, so Im still in the dark as to what caused this... But I finally fixed the issue
It turns out that the harddrive that I was using on /dev/hda was the problem, when I switched /dev/hdb to the single drive in the system I was able to reinstall and get gentoo grub working (at least for the linux kernel) I now have to see If I can get XP installed on the second disk in the system and what kind of problems that will cause, but it works!!!
