Gentoo -> Gnome -> Firefox -> Flash -> Sound

This is my first post at these forums, so first and foremost, I'd like to say hello. :)

I'm having a problem with my sound. Specifically, when I try to view flash files, java, etc. in FireFox, there is no sound. The file/movie plays perfectly, but there is no sound.

I already checked the sound volume, everything is set toward the middle.

I'm running a Gnome GUI on Gentoo.

When I try to open "Volume Monitor" I get an error saying "Cannot connect to sound daemon. Please run 'esd' at a command prompt."

When I run "esd" as user, I get:

Code:
greggor@GregDesk ~ $ esd
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:802:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
I was told to ignore this error, but when I 'ps x' I don't see esound, esd, or anything of the like running.

I have already emerged esound.

I still get the same error when trying to open "Volume Monitor", even after running the esd command and getting the error.

If anyone has any ideas, please, share them :)

Have you tested sound using any other applications? If so did it work?

If it didn't work, have you tried following the gentoo alsa install guide?

Alsa works. I use xmms and there's absolutely no problem with sound. It's that whole esound thing that's bothering me.

If I've heard correctly, the esound driver is supposed to run on top of the ALSA driver to transmit sound between the kernel and the application... But I have no idea what's wrong with it.

to start services in gentoo, for instance the esound server, you must do it like this. /etc/init.d/esd start. if that doesnt work post what the error says back here

I ran /etc/init.d/esound start , it worked, but FF still won't run sound.

/etc/init.d/esd does not exist

I'm having similar trouble, although it isn't just firefox. Seems to be anything that uses the esd.
I first noticed it when trying to get the basic gnome sounds to work.

esd at the command line give the output:

Code:
esd: Esound sound daemon already running or stale UNIX socket
/tmp/.esd/socket
This socket already exists indicating esd is already running.
Exiting...
ALSA works fine, is there a volume control for esd?

I should have mentioned, esdplay also produces no sound. Is this the same for you greggor?

I tried esdplay /usr/share/sound/....wav

playsound works, i think it must use alsa or oss emulation.
