What program were you using to download it? I usually use links or lynx to download stuff to avoid typing in a wrong address with wget. I usually download into /mnt/gentoo, but as long as you choose a writable directory, you should be fine. Make sure the internet connection is working by browsing to google with links or lynx.

OK, so you're in the /mnt/gentoo, directory, right? And you've mounted the appropriate partition on /mnt/gentoo. Do "ls" and see if the stage file shows up. If not, you should look for it elsewhere in the filesystem and copy it to /mnt/gentoo.

I'm pretty sure links has always asked me where to save to. Did you press "d" to start the download?

When you do the tar command, type "tar -xvjpf stage3" and then press TAB. The shell should auto-complete the filename. If it doesn't, the file isn't in the current directory.

The full manual is rather more helpful than the quick reference guide . I think you have to enter the full path in the little dialog box it gives you. Just scroll the cursor all the way to the left and add a "/mnt/gentoo/". I think the default is to save it to the current directory (ie. the directory that you ran links from).

hey guys im havin one more error

im on compiling and installing the Kernal in the manual

make dep && make bzImage modules modules_install > i just typed that it installed the kernal but i got this error at the bottom

no rule to make target 'bzimage'. stop

so the next command im supposed to do is

cp arch/i386/boot/bzimage /boot/kernal-2.2.26-gentoo-r9 but it doesnt work because bzimage wasnt created

is this mandatory or can i skip this? and does anyone know how to fix it?

capital I (eye) in bzImage. And If you're using 2.6.x, you can just do "make bzImage modules modules_install" (you don't need the "make dep")

Does it keep booting or stop? Can you log in? What does "rc-update show" say? What about "rc-status"? Does anything happen if you try "rc default"?

I can't find anything about setting runlevel in the manual. Can you point me to a page?

If I print the documentation to a file, I only get 86 pages. Can you give me a link to the online page?
