This last prob is really quite simple, create the file .xinitrc with nano/pico/vi/emacs in your home dir and add exec startkde. This way it executes kde when you type startx.

create .xinitrc in your home dir
Code:
echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc
also I put this in .bashrc
source /etc/profile
then as root I copy
cp /home/yourname/.bashrc /root
cp /home/yourname/bash_profile /root
this gives you a color prompt + changes the window title to PWD (current dir)
good job, have fun and ask away

allright... Now I crashed the whole X server.. When I start it says "cannot find monitor". I ran xorg --config and then it stopped working. I checked /etc/xorg.config and it looks okay. Any ideas?

Thanks,
JC

Okay -- I finally got it to work. For some reason when I deleted the xorg.conf file and typed 'startx' it came up fine As soon as I fixed that problem, another one came up. I can't install the pcmcia drivers.

I type:
emerge pcmcia-cs
and it starts going, but then I get an error saying:
xcardinfo.c:97: error: `CS_EVENT_RESET_COMPLETE' undeclared here (not in a function)
xcardinfo.c:97: error: initializer element is not constant
xcardinfo.c:97: error: (near initialization for `event_tag[4].event')

!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

I did compile pcmcia support into the kernel, so I don't know if this is a necessary step. I figure it is because when I type:

bash-2.05b# iwconfig eth0 mode Managed

I get:
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth0 ; Operation not supported.

The lights on the wi-fi card don't light up, and the kde control panel says that there are no pcmcia controllers detected. How can I fix this?

Thanks,
JC

It won't install when you do
Code:
emerge USE="-X" emerge pcmcia-cs
?
Looks like it is harder than I thought,see if this helps;

nope. I still get the error. I've searched on google and the gentoo forums, but no one else seems to have this problem. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
JC
