Did you write it as a bootable CD? I assume you downloaded an image, but under what OS did you write the CD? For instance, in Windows under most of the cd-write software you need to specify that it'll be a boot CD so it can finalise the session and do other bits & bobs to make it work.
Is it an .iso file or really a .tar.gz (I think you edited that out but I remember from before isn't it) cause for all I know .tar.gz aren't for boot disks.
When you boot there's this line press "keyx" to enter setup. You have to hit that one. Then there's IIRC in advanced settings a few things about boot order. You have to add CDRom to the list if it isn't yet and make sure it boots before your hard disk does. Be careful in BIOS btw!
if anyone could go through gentoo setup i ahve suse and xp on my computer right now and grub is installed but when the boot loader comes up there is no cd-rom option............i dont know where to go from here
I meant there comes a message which lists a key which might be different from mine so I called it keyX. For example I get the message press DEL for setup. so for me the key is DEL you should get a similar message.
For the gentoo installation you should read the gentoo documentation. From what I've seen and heard it's the best documentation of any distro and it was really clear and gave alot of info.

There doens't have to be a cdrom option and it won't be there like you noticed. You have to make sure your computer checks for boot cds in the startup process (before starting grub from the hard disk)
