GENTOO 2005.1 Installation Script/Walk-Through.
GENTOO 2005.1 INSTALLATION SCRIPT/WALK-THROUGH.
If you are interested in a reasonably well written set of 3 short scripts to help you through the installation of Gentoo 2005.1, visit the site:
http://linux.coconia.net/
I would be interested in any errors that anyone may find.

You might want to add some pictures. BTW, instead of making a new post, you can click on the "Edit" button in the lower right of you post.

Not flaming, just my opinion on people making scripts for gentoo
Quote:
A few months ago I was given a set of Linux distributions which included Gentoo 2005.0. I attempted to install Gentoo, but quickly gave up. Without any instructions it was almost impossible to guess what one was meant to do.

Thats what the documentation is for, step-by-step... I have never had one installation not boot etc from following the manual
Gentoo not only provides the user with a stable and highly customized system but it also teaches you about what goes 'into' the system and how linux is configured.
The only reason I could think of wanting to use a script is in an environment where I needed to install gentoo on multiple computers that had different hardware, else I would just ghost. Most of the time spent on installation is compiling, entering the commands is just basic copy and past. (example: emerge gentoo-sources) takes 1 sec to type, all the rest of the time is compiling.
EDIT: good work on the scripts though

A script is actually quite important.
If someone tries Gentoo, and throws it away cause they can't figure what happens, then they don't learn nothing,....

Ouch, red on blue and blue on red, pain to my eyes. I started with Mandriva 2005 (aka Mandrake 10.2) and I've been with it from the start. I figured I'd stick with it until I get another comuter to put Gentoo or slackware or something on. Very nice article though.

"I started with Mandriva 2005 (aka Mandrake 10.2),.."
I agree -- I think Mandriva 10.2 is great.
By the way a new edition is out.

XavierP said: "LQ is a knowledge repository. If you wish to add to the knowledge, post it here. If you wish to advertise on LQ, contact Jeremy."
So source code is not knowledge?
I think you just wanted to close the thread on the javascript movies.
You don't care at all about knowledge and the spreading of such

I believe he meant that you were obviously advertising your script. These forums are setup to help people with questions... thus it being called linuxQUESTIONS.org. No offense or anything. I'm thinking that they wouldn't have minded as much if you'd simply put this post in the general forum as it would be a better category for this sort of thing.
Also, I think installation scripts for gentoo are a good idea so thanks for the time you put into it. Many people say that it's extremely easy as long as you follow the steps in the walkthrough exactly, but the walkthrough required people to manually write an fstab file last I checked. That's enough to kill off most prospective users right there. Also, the fact that compiling takes most of the time is immaterial because as long as you have to come back to type something every once in awhile you sort of have to "babysit" the installation process. That's not a BIG deal because you can just do it some day that you're gonna watch tv and check in every once in awhile, but I can understand people not wanting to have to deal with that.
Also, do you mind using the edit button every once in awhile? A whole bunch of short double and triple posts just gets annoying after awhile.

Yes,... it is called sharing knowledge. Answering, perhaps unasked questions, perhaps asked.
"These forums are setup to help people with questions... thus it being called linuxQUESTIONS.org."
So, what you really mean is:
"thus it being called linuxQUESTIONS.org and not linuxANSWERS.org"
