Geforce 5200 installed but X not running

Dear Linux Gurus,

I am trying to get my PC up and running with Mandrake 9.1

A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon XP 2500+
GeforceFX 5200 - Asus
Kingstion 512 PC2700
Seagate Sata 80Mb

I updated the XF86Config-4 like:
Section "Device"
Identification "Device1"
VendorName "nvidia Corporation"
BoardName "nvidia Geforce 2 DDR (generic)"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "DPMS"
End of Section

I read in a file, that I should do the editing not from the graphic environment, so I told Mandrake not to boot into the graphical environment. And I did the changes, and then booted, and when I type startx or X the only thing I get is the nvidia splash screem, then the background image of gnome, and it brings me back to the non-graphical environment and asks for login.

How can I get the X to run properly?

Thanks!

Is there an error message or anything that could help us?

Could you copy and paste the content of the XFree86 log file which is in /var/log/?

XFree86.0.log 1/2

Hi!

I thought it to be too large. But I guess you have to see all of it. So enjoy!

Thanks!

ok, you should go to your bios and change some parameters:

Assign IRQ to VGA=enabled

PnP (Plug and Play) OS installed:disabled.

Come back and tell me!

Same thing.

/su,

Went to the BIOS, but this MB does not have those options...
I changed where the IRQ are assigned manually, but that is all. I have had other MB with exactly those options... but not on this one.

Then tried to run Linux... and got exactly the same thing...
nvidia splash screen, then the small watch that seemt to be starting X, then kicked out to the command line.

Then type startx or X and happens the same... but this time, I stay in a blue screen with the mouse working but no icons or menues to use.

Shall I reinstall everything? Do you recommend a different dtsro for my hardware?

thanks!
salvador.

I use the same video card and I didn't get any problems running mandrake, I suppose then that something in your config is wrong.

I understand with your last message that your X server is working but nothing happens, am I right?

If yes, strike ctrl + alt + F2 at the same time, you'll see another console. Login as user and type ps -u 'username' and tell me what you see.

At first startx boot mandake asks you a few question about the desktop configuration and it sometimes hangs... but I can't remember the name of the process. Must be something with kde in it, but not kde-init..

If you find it, type kill and the pid (number) of the process.

About other distro's, I tried red hat but I found that their packages management was not really understandable and easy to use.. So I tried debian, which is really more difficult to set up with a recent video card like the FX 5200 (kernel compiling, and strange install of kde 3.1.2) but debian seems to be really stable.

That's only my point of view and I don't have enough experience to say which one is the best.. All distro's have their weakpoints and their strenghts.

Full diagnostic...

Hi,

Followed your advice, and got a list of the process running, but no idea which one to kill.

Still stocked in the same step. And since I have done some changes since your last piece of advice... decided to bring full information of the status of my current system.

Here we go:

What caught my attention

Name file: ---info---
Jul 29 01:10:33 localhost kernel: agpgart: unsupported bridge
Jul 29 01:10:33 localhost kernel: agpgart: no supported devices found.

File Name: ---Status---
Status: Disabled

File Name: --Warnings--
Jul 29 01:10:33 localhost kernel: 0: NVRM: AGPGART: unable to retrieve symbol table

File Name: ---XFree86.0.log---
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Option "agp_try_unsupported=1" is not used

So after this exhaustive overview... do you have any ideas how I can bring back the graphic environment? Perhaps I am still missing a piece of information...

Thanks!
Salvador.

Lightbulb Me Mandrake 9.1 too

I use Mandrake 9.1 to. We have a similiar setup except for the motherboard. I booted to failsafe and installed the somethingdriver.run file and have been running ever since. It changes the files automatically so it says and you only have to do one file. Maybe I missed something but mine works fine.

Maybe this is a idea for you to try. I'l find it and post the link if you want to try it.

Did you install the Nvidia drivers and make the correct changes to the XF86Config file?

The 'Video Bios :??.??.??.??' doesn't look right.
I got a 5600 and the first thing that comes up when I boot is a screen with the nvidia bios.Thats even before the bios of the motherboard shows up.You might want to try to throw that card in a M$ box and see if it works at all.

Question Who me?

Medic6666: I didn't do anything to xf86conf. I did a file search and it didn't find one. My understanding was that you run the script file and that's it. I don't play doom or anything but it works fine I guess. Am I supposed to change something?

if you are trying to run X...

with Nvidia drivers you need to edit the XF86Conf file. If you are Running X Windows there must be a XF86Conf file.

I'm using redhat9 and the path for it is: /etc/X11/XF86Conf

Note the upper/lower case.

If you read the install notes it does say this:

(sec-03) EDITING YOUR XF86CONFIG FILE
__________________________________________________________________________

When XFree86 4.0 was released, it used a slightly different XF86Config
file syntax than the 3.x series did, and so to allow both 3.x and 4.x
versions of XFree86 to co-exist on the same system, it was decided that
XFree86 4.x was to use the configuration file "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
if it existed, and only if that file did not exist would the file
"/etc/X11/XF86Config" be used (actually, that is an over-simplification
of the search criteria; please see the XF86Config man page for a complete
description of the search path). Please make sure you know what
configuration file XFree86 is using. If you are in doubt, look for a
line beginning with "(==) Using config file:" in your XFree86 log file
("/var/log/XFree86.0.log"). This README will use "XF86Config" to refer
to your configuration file, whatever it is named.

If you do not have a working XF86Config file, there are several ways
to start: there is a sample config file that comes with XFree86,
and there is a sample config file included with the NVIDIA driver
package (it gets installed in /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/).
You could also use a program like 'xf86config'; some distributions
provide their own tool for generating an XF86Config file. For more
on XF86Config file syntax, please refer to the man page.

If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:

Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")

with

Driver "nvidia"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

if they exist. There are also numerous options that can be added to
the XF86Config file to fine-tune the NVIDIA XFree86 driver. Please see
Appendix D for a complete list of these options.

Once you have configured your XF86Config file, you are ready to restart
X and begin using the accelerated OpenGL libraries. After you restart X,
you should be able to run any OpenGL application and it will automatically
use the new NVIDIA libraries. If you encounter any problems, please
see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section below.

Let me know if you have X running without a XF86Conf and i'll check up for ya.
