Geforce 3 Ti 500 Not detecting
 

I am trying to install Icepack linux right now, but I also tried Debian. As far as I can tell, these releases are both picking up my AGP eVGA Geforce 3 Ti 500 as a PCI card, which it's not. The install then fails. I have tried specifiying the correct drivers, and tried using the generic driver that is supposed to work with 99% of all video cards. No go. What do I do?

It all depends on what version of XFree86 is included in those distro's. For a GF3 you need 4.0.3 or higher and the latest version is 4.2.0.

Well, I had a later version of Icepack which came with 4.0.2, and went back to an earlier version, and I don't know what kind of X that has... Neither of them work. One guy on [H]ard Forum told me I needed to use the Geforce 3 kernel on the Nvidia website... How would I do that?

Instructions are in the readme from the nvidia linux page. Don't use the rpms.

Um, well you see, I don't have Linux installed yet, and it won't let me edit X conf file manually....

Alrighty, I got slack and I have a command line now. But Windows is bull, and it won't let me use rawrite to get Geforce drivers to slack. Are there generic drivers for Nvidia in X, that I can tell it to use?

Yes, use the nv driver.

Do xf86config and select generic nvidia for your card, once you get x working with that install the nvidia driver.

w00t, this is almost working, I am writing this from linux now!! But, I have a problem. My screen is HUGE! I mean giant. My desktop covers more than the whole screen and I have to move it around with my mouse. I'm not sure how I managed this... The only thing I wasn't sure I set right was my monitor horizontal and vertical syncs... HOw do I fix this? I can't tell if the resolution is right or not or find a place to change it...

You've got it set to use virtual desktops, you can do xf86config again and when you get to the screen section disable them or edit your /etc/XF86Config(-4).

Well, I tried that. When I run xf86config it never asks me if I want to enable virtual desktops... Where do I set that?

It's near the part where you set the resolution.

It is seriously not in there. I did a "find on this page" for virtual, and desktop, and it found neither of those worlds. I'm in my /etc/X11/XF86Config. It's not there.

In xf86config when you get to the part where you set the res (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, etc) it asks you if you want to use virtual desktop, say no.
