Dear all,
I use gedit a lot for software development. I know, I know: "use emacs or vi instead!"
But as I am kind of used to it and like the visual aspect of gedit, I would like to solve 2 problems that really annoy me.
First problem:
When I highlight something with the mouse and then want to paste it using the middle mouse button, I must do it without clicking anywhere else, otherwise the buffer's content is wiped :-| .
This doesn't happen with other editors, so I cannot understand this behavior.
Second problem:
When editing a file if the permissions are set to read only, and I go to the console and change the permissions to allow writing to the file, I have to close and open the file again or save it with another name and then rename it to the original name.
On Nedit, for example, if I change the permissions with the file open, it behaves accordingly to the new permissions set on command line and so it will allow me to save the file.
I have gedit version 3.18.3 which I just installed to Mint 18.1 from the repository.
For your first problem, I can double click to select, or left mouse hold and drag to select, and when I hit the center mouse button it will paste it to where my my mouse cursor is located and will do so repeatedly in the same location, or if I happen to move around. It retains the copy buffer
For the second problem. I made a file read-only. Edited it and could not save it. Went to the terminal and made the file read-write, leaving gedit open, and gedit allowed me to save it without any complaint.
And you are welcome to use whatever editor you choose. I used gedit as well as others and it just depends upon availability and preference for me.
Thanks so much for your answer. I've checked just now and my gedit version is 2.28.4 :-). A bit old I believe:-D
In my case, I am not using Linux on my personal machine, I simply connect to my employer's server running RHEL6, which I cannot touch. Maybe this version had some bugs, I don't really know. I will check with our sys admin if it is possible to upgrade the gedit's version to a newer one and, hopefully, have these issues solved.
Many thanks,
Pedro
