Question GDM won't launch at startx

ok, I had another thread for what I thought was a XFree86 problem, but I figured out (I think) that the problem is with GDM. When I type startx I get a moire background with a stopwatch for a cursor. If instead, I launch kdm rather than startx, kdm launches and works fine (it's awful tho). BUT, if I try to launch gdm, I get the same moire background and stopwatch cursor as when I launch startx...

How do I find out what is wrong with GDM?

thanks

Have you tried setting inittab back to run level 5 and setting it to use gdm to see what that looks like? The only thing I can think of is that gdm has 0 options in the window manager list and is running whatever is default.

Sorry if that doesn't help

this is my inittab contents:

#
# inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up
# the system in a certain run-level.

# Author: Miquel van Smoorenburg, <miquels@drinkel.nl.mugnet.org>
# Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes

# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
