GDM setup

I am having a problem getting GDM to allow me to login as any user, including root. After installing, GDM said there was no user gdm bla bla group gdm. So i made a user gdm under a group gdm. Next, it told me that the user gdm, group gdm, doesn't have ownership of /usr/var/gdm, so I set this up. Next, it instructed me to change the permissions of this dir, and i followed this exactly. Finally, it ran, but when i enter a name and then a password it rejects it. It rejects every account on my machine, including root. I have no idea what to do or if i f*cked up when i followed its error messages. As of now I'm just running xdm until I can fix this problem. If you have any idea how to fix this, or install and set up gdm correctly, please respond.

I fixed my problem once again. Just required a newer version of gdm. I had 2.4.0 installed b/ with the 2.4.0.2 version the problem vanished.

The difference is probably in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. Check it out. It may have saves a copy of the original. -mk

no..gdm.conf and gnomerc are never touched on reinstallations. So the problem couldn't have been that. The "modified date" remains unchanged.
