gdm < Session directory empty, config missing..?
 

oh boy... I seem to find quite a lot of problems using my distro... :)

I've used GDM as my login manager for a while. Since I've had more important things to do, I haven't used the possibility of starting my system straight into graphical greeter, but always started my machine to the "login:" prompt, after which I've started gdm manually. everything's worked fine that way, but now I decided to make gdm start automatically on startup...and now things got tricky.

I read the advice in /etc/inittab on how to use /etc/init.d/xdm to get GDM work. Ok, I used the rc-update as told in the xdm-file and after a reboot, gdm started. I thought everything was ok, but all of a sudden this nice graphical thing hit me with a warning which told me that my session directory is empty, and no configuration file was found.

How's this possible if no problems occur when starting gdm manually? And how to fix this? I've tried to look if gdm doesn't have rights to use some files, but it seems that it does...all necessary files are made available to the user (and group) gdm, in which this thing belongs.

If someone can tell me how to get gdm find the session directory it uses when started manually, and how to give it a working configuration, I'd be more than pleased....

few more things:

where does gdm think it's configuration should be found? I tried to update my gdm to the latest version, but it didn't help...

because the manual starting of gdm won't work anymore either, is there a thing that can break my gdm? I haven't installed any new programs after the last succesful gdm start...

alright, one more thing to be noticed:

when I open gdm, smash OK to the warnings (described above) and open the system/configure, type root password and open the window to configure gdm, I can see that it _does_ read the gdm.conf I've tried to edit manually too.

funny thing - configurator reads the file, but gdm (when it starts) doesn't? "whatta...?"
