GDM config problem

I don't like using KDM or XDM, and I'd like to use GDM instead. This only seems to be impossible, because something's wrong with GDM and it's configuration.

I can start X and Gnome, which I use, with GDM but only in "Gnome Failsafe" (or what was the exact term?) - whatever I try to do, GDM _always_ tells me at startup that my "Session directory is empty" and "no configuration was found".

This is odd, because when I open the windows (inside GDM) which allows me to change configuration, it _does_ load my configuration. Themes and all - everyting is just as I want. So the configuration program reads my config file, but GDM itself won't.

Why, why, why....? I've checked each configuration file's (and session directory's too) permissions, and they're all set to "gdm" in which GDM works. So no problem should exist there. What on earth might prevent GDM from reading the correct config's? Is there somewhere a path to the right files, which is wrong?

Please help if you can..my GDM worked fine right after I installed my Gentoo, but after I did some updates (Gnome 1.2 > 1.4, kernel etc.) I don't recall that GDM would have worked anymore.
