GDM cannot start...

I am using Redhat Linux Eneterprise Linux 4. Today when I turned on my computer, it could not enter GNOME Display Manager anymore. When I tried to run in manually on command line by typing: gdm, the screen flashed to graphical mode and a mouse cursor showed up for about one second, and then the screen returned to text mode with gdm still running in background. From all log information, I am sure that XWindow works fine because xdm and kdm can start without any problem. From /var/log/messages, I found that gdm cannot start gdmlogin which then calls gdmgreeter. Then I used startx to enter XWindow and typed gdmlogin and gdmgreeter, I got a dialog box popping up and saying that:

The greeter version (2.6.0.5) does not match the daemon version.
You have probably just upgraded gdm.
Please restart the gdm daemon or reboot the computer.

But gdmgreeter can be started running correctly by using this command in XWindow:

DOING_GDM_DEVELOPMENT=yes gdmgreeter

So what hell is going on? How can I make my GDM starting and running?
