Gdk-ERROR using VLC

Hello!

Recently, I installed VLC on my pIII 450MHz (fc2 with KDE *hrm*) ~300MB RAM; wanting to watch a movie on occasion. The openslp package didn't come with yum, so I made a --nodeps (only openslp package missing) and it all went... not so good.

There is no picture, only sound coming, and when trying to fast forward, or anything clicking in the program, makes it crash.

This is what I get:

the command
$vlc
gives this result

$ VLC media player 0.7.2 Bond
[00000222] main input: playlist item `/film/Monthy Python and the Holy Grail.avi'
[00000226] mpeg_audio decoder: MPGA channels:2 samplerate:48000 bitrate:128
[00000227] freetype video output error: failed to load font file /usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/FreeSerifBold.ttf
Gdk-ERROR **: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
serial 77 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x81fa)!

[2]+ Exit 1 vlc
$

It seems to me that something else than my machine is bad, I mean, I have been able to watch movies on a pII 200MHz, and my 450 should at least be able to play an .avi!

Please give me some support, and please don't just tell me to install this or that very flashy player; I have tried Mplayer for example and didn't like it THAT much (actually it messed up Mozilla so badly I had to reinstall).
